Medical
Can my pet eat and drink the night before surgery?
No food after midnight. Pediatric patients under four months old should have 1/4 cup of food at 6:00 AM on the day of surgery.
How long does the surgery take?
The entire process (pre-medication, preparation, surgery, and recovery) generally takes about an hour, but it can vary by pet.
Is the surgery safe?
Yes! Our experienced veterinary team has over 30 years of experience and follows the ASPCA Spay/Neuter Alliance National Spay/Neuter Response Team (NSNRT) method, ensuring the safety of your pet. We can safely perform as many as 40 surgeries per surgeon daily. Please call us with any concerns before scheduling.
Important Note: Pets with a history of seizures should have anesthetic procedures at a full-service veterinary clinic.
Do you send pets home with pain medication?
Take-home pain medication is available for purchase ($10) and is recommended for all pets. For cats, pain medication is applied topically at the clinic and is effective for up to two weeks. For dogs, oral pain medication will be provided with instructions for administration.
What vaccines do you provide and recommend?
Rabies vaccinations are required annually for dogs and cats in Georgia. See our Vaccinations page for a complete list of recommended vaccines.
Do you microchip?
Yes, microchipping is available for $25. This includes the microchip, insertion, and registration.
How old do animals have to be to be fixed?
The preferred age is 12 weeks, but we can spay/neuter healthy pets weighing at least 2 pounds. We reserve the right to refuse service at the discretion of our veterinarian.
What is the oldest age at which an animal can have surgery at your clinic?
Patients six years and older require a pre-surgical “mini panel” blood test to assess their overall health. This test costs $75 and can be performed on the day of surgery. We reserve the right to refuse service at the discretion of our veterinarian.
When do pets start coming in heat?
This varies, but cats can get pregnant as young as five months old, while dogs typically experience their first heat cycle between 6-8 months old.
How long are pets in heat?
Heat cycles generally last 2-3 weeks in cats and dogs, but this can vary.
How long are pets pregnant?
Dogs: 58-68 days
Cats: 63-65 days
Can you spay/neuter a pregnant pet?
Yes, but this will terminate the pregnancy.
- There is no additional cost for spaying during the first trimester.
- A $15 fee per trimester applies in the second and third trimesters to cover additional care and fluids.
Is it dangerous to spay/neuter a pet in heat or pregnant?
All surgeries carry some risk, and that risk is elevated during pregnancy or a heat cycle.
How soon after having a litter can a pet be spayed?
We recommend waiting until puppies/kittens are weaned (around 5-7 weeks) to avoid complications. A flank spay is available for an additional $25 if the mother is still nursing.
Recovery
Post Surgical Instructions here.
What is the recovery period like?
- Keep your pet calm and quiet for 7-10 days.
- Prevent licking or chewing at the incision.
- Dogs should be leash-walked only.
- Cats should be confined to a small room to prevent jumping.
- We recommend keeping pets indoors during recovery.
What is the extra green incision?
This is a small tattoo that indicates your pet has been spayed/neutered.
Should I be worried if my pet is licking their incision?
Yes! This can introduce bacteria and lead to infection.
How can I prevent my pet from licking their incision?
- We recommend pain medication ($10) for comfort.
- An e-collar or cone is strongly encouraged for dogs ($8).
- Bitter Apple spray can be applied around the incision (not directly on it).
- Do not apply anything else to the incision.
- Call us immediately if you have any questions or concerns about the incision site.
For more detailed information, please see our Post-Surgical Care Instructions.
